Scripture to Read: Colossians 1:1–2
In each letter that God led Paul to write to the churches in Paul’s day, each letter starts with the introduction of the writer. Note that I said “writer” and not “author,” because God is THE Author of all 66 books in His Holy Word. So, as God led Paul to write His Word, we read in Colossians 1:1–2, “Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, 2 To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ who are at Colossae: Grace to you and peace from God our Father.” God had Paul identify himself as an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God the Father. God had called Paul to be one of His special messengers to deliver the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ to people all over Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to all of the regions beyond. Paul knew that God had chosen him to be one of His representatives. God also had Paul mention Timothy, Paul’s brother in Christ, who was another servant of our Lord who served alongside Paul on many of the missionary journeys God had led Paul to lead. This letter was first written to the Christians in Colossae. God had Paul describe the believers in Colossae as faithful followers of Christ. We know God’s Word was not just for the first-century Christians, but His Word is just as much for us today. God desires that we be faithful followers of Christ and not followers of the things of this world. Let us examine our lives to be sure we are faithful.
