Scripture to Read: 2 Timothy 2:20-21
Today, God furthers His truth from 2 Timothy 2:19 and gives us an illustration in 2 Timothy 2:20-21. God has Paul use the home of someone who is wealthy and the items within the wealthy person’s home for comparison to our lives. God tells us that some houses have objects, utensils, plates, cups, and other things that are made of gold and silver. Then in that same home, there are objects, utensils, plates, cups, and other things made of clay and wood and therefore do not have as much value. In most wealthy homes, the items of gold and silver are used during special times of the year, when special guests are present and other special occasions. The less valuable items are considered dishonorable to use for such special times. God wants our lives to be cleansed of the things that are dishonorable to Him. Even though these things (like sexual impurity, lustful pleasures, being hostile toward others, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, causing division, gossip, envy, wild parties, getting drunk, and other sins like these) may seem ordinary and acceptable to the lost world around us, since they dishonor our Lord, we need to rid ourselves of these things. God has set us apart as vessels of honor because we are His children. He has a plan for each of us, and He wants us ready for the good work He has planned for us to walk in each day (Ephesians 2:10, Titus 2:7, Titus 2:14).
Challenge & Application
1. What did God teach you today about being a vessel of honor for Him and His good work?
2. How are you preparing yourself daily for our Master so He can use you for His good works?
