Scripture to Read: 2 Thessalonians 2:1-2
God had used Paul to teach the Thessalonian believers about the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, as referenced in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18. Today we read how God, through Paul, told the Thessalonian believers NOT to be “shaken in mind” (like to be suddenly frightened by something) nor to be “troubled” (an ongoing state of worry and anxiousness) as if the Lord had already returned. Obviously, there were false teachers in the days of the Thessalonian believers trying to convince them that Christ had already returned. No one knows when Christ will return but what we do know is the Truth that God has laid out for us in His Word. We read in Matthew 24:37-42 that the day of the coming of our Lord will be like the days of Noah. Even though Noah preached, for about 75 years, that a flood was coming, everyone went about their business as usual. When the Lord returns, everyone will be living each day expecting zero change. God also describes our Lord’s return more dramatically in Revelation 19:11, 14,15, 21. As we can see from God’s Word, there will be no doubt for anyone when Christ does return. So, God gave the Thessalonian believers (and us) His Truth, through Paul, so that no one would be swayed by “a spirit or a message or a letter as if from an apostle” that the day of the Lord has already happened. Therefore, we must live expectantly for Him and be at peace that we will know when He returns.
