Day 6

Scripture to Read: 1 Timothy 1:6-7

As we examine 1 Timothy 1:6-7, we read God’s warning about people who willingly turn away from God’s goal of love. Instead of loving God with all their heart, soul, and mind, and loving others as themselves, these people choose to get caught up in “fruitless discussion.” Another way of saying this is that these people who are not pursuing Christ and His Word instead are pursuing empty arguments and useless, meaningless discussions. We also read that these people want to be “teachers of the law of Moses, but they don’t know what they are talking about, even though they speak so confidently.” (NLT) We have people like that all around us today. These people get caught up in their social media accounts, wasting time with useless, meaningless discussions about things they have zero control over or have no factual knowledge of what they are discussing. What we must guard against is becoming one of those people. Even in desiring to teach God’s Word, we must make sure we NOT add our opinion but stick to God’s Word. God even warns us in James 3:1, “Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment.” God is not saying that we should not teach His Word because we are all called to share Him and His Word with others. But God is warning us that we better be living His Word if we plan to teach His Word because people will examine if we are living what we are teaching.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about getting caught up in useless discussions and about teaching His Word? 2. How are you living out God’s Truth each day and guarding against meaningless arguments?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

This week we are walking through 1 Timothy 1:1-11. As God led Paul to write to Timothy and, of course, all believers through the ages, we will examine what God is saying to us this week. In 1 Timothy 1:1, God led Paul to introduce himself. We read that Paul was an apostle, which means that Paul had seen the resurrected Christ. There are no ap...

Day 2

Today we focus on 1 Timothy 1:2. Today, we learn that this letter was originally written to Timothy, but we must never lose sight that God wrote this letter through Paul to all believers, not just to Timothy. God had Paul refer to Timothy as “my true child in the faith.” We know that Timothy put his faith in the Lord from an early age but we ...

Day 3

As we learned yesterday, Timothy became the pastor of the church at Ephesus after being mentored by Paul. Of course, God continued to use Paul to mentor and encourage Timothy as Timothy pastored the believers in Ephesus. Just as Timothy had Paul to mentor and encourage him, we also need people in our lives to mentor and encourage us. God used...

Day 4

Since we are taking 1 Timothy 1:1-11 verse by verse so far, we are continuing from yesterday’s instruction to make sure none of us are teaching strange doctrines. Today we read in 1 Timothy 1:4, as God led Paul to write that we also make sure we, as believers, do not “pay attention to myths and endless genealogies.” The reason God gives this ...

Day 5

Today we read God’s goal for our lives in 1 Timothy 1:5. The goal of God’s instruction in our lives is LOVE. This goal should not surprise us because God has made this goal clear throughout His Word. When Jesus was asked in Matthew 22:36 what the greatest commandment was of all of the commandments, Jesus answered, in Matthew 22:37-39, that it...

Day 7

God lets us know, in 1 Timothy 1:8, that His Law is good if it is used in the right way. We know God’s Law is good because it is from God (James 1:17). God has given us His Law so we are able to walk in obedience to His Law each day. It is interesting that God has Paul write, in 1 Timothy 1:9, that His Law was not given for those who are righ...
