Scripture to Read: 1 Peter 4:7
We continue to unpack 1 Peter 4:7 today as God speaks to us about our prayer life. We know our Lord Jesus will come back for His church one day very soon. It could even be today, but too many people live with little or zero expectations of Christ’s return. Even within the body of believers, many have lost focus on their intimate fellowship with our Lord. Therefore, many believers don’t expect Christ to come back, at least not anytime soon. But, since He is coming back, God tells us in 1 Peter 4:7, therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer. To be of sound judgment means to be serious, committed, dedicated. So, God is telling us that as we pray, we need to take our prayer time seriously, be committed and dedicated to prayer because that is how we deepen our fellowship with our Lord Jesus Christ. God also tells us to be of sober spirit, which means to be disciplined, controlled, well trained. So, again, as we think about our prayer life, we need to be disciplined, focused, training ourselves to fellowship with our Lord and not letting anything deter us from our precious, intimate time with Him each day. Our daily disciplined prayer time, our deep connection with our Lord should take priority in our lives each day. Prayer is so important that God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are praying on our behalf, continually, in God the Father’s throne room (Romans 8:26–27, 34). So, let’s join our Triune God in prayer!
