Day 6

Scripture to Read: 1 Corinthians 9:24–25

Living a disciplined life is a major part of our walk with our Lord Jesus Christ. We read in 1 Corinthians 9:24–25, “Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. 25 Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.” God had Paul use runners and other athletes as examples of those who compete to win. Those athletes willingly submit themselves to extensive physical and mental training before ever competing in the games. They also have to exercise discipline and self-control in what they eat, drink, their sleep schedule, and in everything else they do. God desires that we run this race of life, as Christians, as those who will do whatever it takes to win. Just as athletes who are serious about winning will never compromise in their training, so we, as Christians, must never compromise in our walk with our Lord. We must train daily by memorizing Scripture, passionately pursuing our intimacy with our Lord each day, denying our fleshly desires and crucifying them daily, sharing Christ with those around us, and living a life that is above reproach. We don’t do it to earn God’s favor, but instead, we do it because we already have God’s favor through Christ our Lord. What we receive back is priceless, for we get to look forward to hearing our Lord say to us, “Well done, My good and faithful servant.”

Challenge & Application

How disciplined is your current walk with our Lord, and what areas do you need to be more disciplined in? What areas of your spiritual life have you grown in, and how can you help others to do the same?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

When we consider all that Christ has done for us, it is overwhelmingly incredible. Jesus told us in John 8:31–32, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” We have been set free from the bondage to sin that we were once in. We have also been set free f...

Day 2

God used Paul to share the gospel message with various groups of people. Over the next few days, we’ll examine the different groups of people to whom Paul took the opportunity to share the gospel. We read in 1 Corinthians 9:20, “To the Jews I became as a Jew, so that I might win Jews; to those who are under the Law, as under the Law though no...

Day 3

The next group of people Paul shared the gospel of Christ with were the Gentiles. We read in 1 Corinthians 9:21, “to those who are without law, as without law, though not being without the law of God but under the law of Christ, so that I might win those who are without law.” Paul knew that the Gentiles did not seek favor from God by followin...

Day 4

God had Paul mention one more group of people that he sought to share the gospel of Christ with. God had Paul record this in 1 Corinthians 9:22, “To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak; I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some.” It’s interesting that Paul refers to a particular group of people as...

Day 5

God used Paul to share the hope of Christ with everyone who came across his path. Paul was simply willing to be used by the Lord in every opportunity that God opened up to him. We read in 1 Corinthians 9:22–23, “…I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some. 23 I do all things for the sake of the gospel, so that I...

Day 7

God had Paul finish with this in 1 Corinthians 9:26–27: “Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; 27 but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.” God had Paul proclaim that he did not run his spiritual life wi...
