Day 5

Scripture to Read: 1 Corinthians 11:4–10

The line of authority God gave us allows others to see Him glorified through our lives. When God created man and woman, we read in Genesis 1:26–28 that both male and female were created in God’s image, so both men and women are image bearers of God. However, we also see in Genesis 2:18–25 that the woman originated from the man and was created for his sake. God saw that it was not good for the man to be alone, so God made the woman as a helper fit for the man. So, man and woman were both created in God’s image, but God also placed His order of authority for them. We read in 1 Corinthians 11:8–10, “For man does not originate from woman, but woman from man; 9 for indeed man was not created for the woman’s sake, but woman for the man’s sake. 10 Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.” Scripture describes angels as both participants and observers in worship, as seen in Revelation 5:11–12. Angels also behold God’s glory and witness the conduct of believers. God had Paul instruct the believers to be aware of the angels, taking note of their orderly or disorderly conduct, especially as it relates to God’s design. Also, in Isaiah 6:2, the seraphim veiled parts of themselves in reverence before God. This description sets the example of humility and respect for God in worship. Angels are God’s servants, and so it makes sense that they are concerned when God’s established design is disregarded.

Challenge & Application

Why is it important for every believer to submit to God’s authority and be willing to serve Him wholeheartedly? How do you see the church of today submitting to God’s authority and honoring Him in worship?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

God used Paul to challenge all Christians at the end of 1 Corinthians 10 to be sure that, as His children, in everything we do, we do it in a manner that glorifies Him as our Heavenly Father. Then, God had Paul write this in 1 Corinthians 11:1, “Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.” At first glance, this might seem like an arrogan...

Day 2

God desires every follower of Christ to be passionately pursuing our intimacy with Him and doing the same with His Word. We read in 1 Corinthians 11:2, “Now I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold firmly to the traditions, just as I delivered them to you.” God had Paul speak a word of encouragement to the believers in Cori...

Day 3

God had Paul shift gears slightly and move into the issue of authority, exploring how God designed lines of authority. We read in 1 Corinthians 11:3, “But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ.” God had Paul instruct them that He wanted them to understa...

Day 4

We know that God the Father and God the Son are equal but that God the Father is the head in the order of the Trinity. That is why Jesus repeatedly proclaimed that He came to fulfill the Father’s will. In the husband-and-wife relationship, there is equality, but also a God-ordained order that makes the relationship healthy and honoring to God...

Day 6

God has Paul define for us how men and women need each other even though God has established the line of authority. We read in 1 Corinthians 11:11–12, “However, in the Lord, neither is woman independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12 For as the woman originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and al...

Day 7

God had Paul conclude this portion of Scripture with these words in 1 Corinthians 11:13–16, “Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, 15 but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair i...
