Day 3

Scripture to Read: 1 Corinthians 11:3

God had Paul shift gears slightly and move into the issue of authority, exploring how God designed lines of authority. We read in 1 Corinthians 11:3, “But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ.” God had Paul instruct them that He wanted them to understand the line of authority that He as God the Father had established. This line of authority is critical to the health of every family and the health of the church. First, we see that Christ is the head, that is, the authority over every man. Christ is to whom we surrendered our lives. As followers of Christ, we must submit to Him and His Word, walking in daily obedience to Him. God clearly states this in Ephesians 1:22, Ephesians 4:15, Ephesians 5:23, Colossians 1:18, and Colossians 2:19. With Christ being the head of His church, that makes His church His body. As Christ’s body, we are to glorify Him by living for Him daily. God had Paul also share that the man is the head of the woman in the marriage relationship. This does not mean that the husband is to use his authority in a demeaning or demanding manner, but rather that he is to love and cherish his wife as Christ loves His church (Ephesians 5:22–33). We also see that God the Father is the head of Christ. God designed this line of authority so that His will may be fulfilled.

Challenge & Application

Why has God placed a line of authority in place within His church and within the family? How do you see this line of authority bringing honor to God and how have you seen it misused?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

God used Paul to challenge all Christians at the end of 1 Corinthians 10 to be sure that, as His children, in everything we do, we do it in a manner that glorifies Him as our Heavenly Father. Then, God had Paul write this in 1 Corinthians 11:1, “Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.” At first glance, this might seem like an arrogan...

Day 2

God desires every follower of Christ to be passionately pursuing our intimacy with Him and doing the same with His Word. We read in 1 Corinthians 11:2, “Now I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold firmly to the traditions, just as I delivered them to you.” God had Paul speak a word of encouragement to the believers in Cori...

Day 4

We know that God the Father and God the Son are equal but that God the Father is the head in the order of the Trinity. That is why Jesus repeatedly proclaimed that He came to fulfill the Father’s will. In the husband-and-wife relationship, there is equality, but also a God-ordained order that makes the relationship healthy and honoring to God...

Day 5

The line of authority God gave us allows others to see Him glorified through our lives. When God created man and woman, we read in Genesis 1:26–28 that both male and female were created in God’s image, so both men and women are image bearers of God. However, we also see in Genesis 2:18–25 that the woman originated from the man and was created...

Day 6

God has Paul define for us how men and women need each other even though God has established the line of authority. We read in 1 Corinthians 11:11–12, “However, in the Lord, neither is woman independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12 For as the woman originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and al...

Day 7

God had Paul conclude this portion of Scripture with these words in 1 Corinthians 11:13–16, “Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, 15 but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair i...
