Day 2

Scripture to Read: 1 Corinthians 11:2

God desires every follower of Christ to be passionately pursuing our intimacy with Him and doing the same with His Word. We read in 1 Corinthians 11:2, “Now I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold firmly to the traditions, just as I delivered them to you.” God had Paul speak a word of encouragement to the believers in Corinth. God had Paul tell them how much he praised and appreciated them because they remembered Paul and had firmly held to the traditions and instructions he had given them while he was with them. These traditions that God led Paul to teach were not man-centered traditions. God warns us against man-centered traditions in Colossians 2:8, “See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.” This shows that God is not interested in anyone hanging on to traditions that are man-centered. God wants us to follow His Word, for only through His Word and His Holy Spirit in us can we be transformed daily to honor our Lord through our lives. We must never set aside God’s Word to follow religious traditions that distract us from what God has commanded us to do. Jesus rebuked the religious leaders in Mark 7:1–13 for “neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men” (verse 8). We must guard against holding on to man-made traditions and we must be sure we are holding to the Truth in God’s Word.

Challenge & Application

What traditions do some believers seek to hold on to that are not biblical but instead man-centered? How are you guarding against holding on to man-centered traditions but instead holding tightly to God’s Word?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

God used Paul to challenge all Christians at the end of 1 Corinthians 10 to be sure that, as His children, in everything we do, we do it in a manner that glorifies Him as our Heavenly Father. Then, God had Paul write this in 1 Corinthians 11:1, “Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.” At first glance, this might seem like an arrogan...

Day 3

God had Paul shift gears slightly and move into the issue of authority, exploring how God designed lines of authority. We read in 1 Corinthians 11:3, “But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ.” God had Paul instruct them that He wanted them to understa...

Day 4

We know that God the Father and God the Son are equal but that God the Father is the head in the order of the Trinity. That is why Jesus repeatedly proclaimed that He came to fulfill the Father’s will. In the husband-and-wife relationship, there is equality, but also a God-ordained order that makes the relationship healthy and honoring to God...

Day 5

The line of authority God gave us allows others to see Him glorified through our lives. When God created man and woman, we read in Genesis 1:26–28 that both male and female were created in God’s image, so both men and women are image bearers of God. However, we also see in Genesis 2:18–25 that the woman originated from the man and was created...

Day 6

God has Paul define for us how men and women need each other even though God has established the line of authority. We read in 1 Corinthians 11:11–12, “However, in the Lord, neither is woman independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12 For as the woman originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and al...

Day 7

God had Paul conclude this portion of Scripture with these words in 1 Corinthians 11:13–16, “Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, 15 but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair i...
