Day 5

Scripture to Read: Romans 6:20–21

Today, God opens our eyes to the reality we lived in apart from Christ. But let’s be sure and understand that what we learn today is still a reality for every person on this earth that is still separated from Christ. Through Paul, God tells us in Romans 6:20–21, “For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 Therefore what benefit were you then deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is death.” At first glance, the wording seems optimistic in Romans 6:20, but that is definitely not the reality. God is showing us that before surrendering to Christ as Lord, there was zero desire for us to submit to God and walk in obedience to Him. That means everyone who is still lost in their sin has no desire to walk with God or please Him. We live in a dark world and see the results of that darkness daily. When we hear about the sin people choose to live in, it breaks (or should break) our hearts. Sin results in death, it always has, and it always will. Being “free in regard to righteousness” is not freedom; instead, it is complete bondage to sin and the death it brings to everyone. God brings out the point of how empty a person's life is that is built on sinful choices, for God has Paul ask what benefit came from the sinful choices we use to make. There’s no benefit because the outcome is death.

Challenge & Application

Before we surrendered to Christ as Lord, why was there zero desire to honor or please God through our choices? How can you help someone this week who is still lost in their sin and reaping death in their lives because of sin?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

God lovingly challenges us through His Word and this week will be no different. As we ended last week, God told us in Romans 6:14, “For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.” We are to have no master in our lives other than our Lord Jesus Christ. If sin takes control of us, it’s because we’ve allowed it ...

Day 2

God has made it abundantly clear that we are not held under the bondage of the law because we could never fulfill the law of God (James 2:10). God gave the law so that all people can see how sinful we are and recognize our need for our Savior. So, today we focus on Romans 6:16, “Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as s...

Day 3

We know all God has been teaching us over the last several weeks about His grace, which abounds beyond all people's sinfulness. Today, God gives us tremendous reasons to rejoice and be thankful for all He’s given us through Christ. Romans 6:17–18, “But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to ...

Day 4

Today, we’re going to park ourselves in front of Romans 6:19, “I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, resulting in further lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness, resulting in sanctification.” In Romans 6:...

Day 6

There is a whole lot of “good news” packed into Romans 6:22 today. God’s Word says, “But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life.” Starting with our freedom from sin ought to set our souls on fire for God and His Word. We know sin always results in...

Day 7

Anytime we have an opportunity to share the “good news” about our Lord Jesus Christ with people, it’s almost guaranteed that we’ll use Romans 6:23 in our presentation. God’s Word says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” We know the result of sin is death, and though God has said...
