Scripture to Read: Romans 1:24–25
God repeats His Truth so that we do not miss what He wants us to obey each day. An excellent example of God repeating the exact phrase is in Romans 1:24, Romans 1:26, and Romans 1:28. The phrase “gave them over” is so important that God had Paul repeat this phrase three times. As we have seen over the past two devotions is that God has made Himself known to all mankind, but mankind has chosen to reject God and live according to our sinful nature. What God led Paul to continue to write in Romans 1:24–25 is that because mankind has chosen to reject God, God “gave them over” to the lusts of their sinful hearts, to sexual impurity. God gave them what they wanted, and mankind chose to use their bodies in a dishonoring way, surrendering to the humiliating power of sin. In other words, mankind became slaves to its sinful desires because they would not surrender to God through our Lord Jesus Christ and become slaves to righteousness. The quick downward spiral that sin takes us on always leads to death (Romans 5:12, Romans 6:16, Romans 6:21, Romans 8:6, Galatians 6:8, James 1:15). Then God tells us that He “gave them over” to their sinful passions because mankind chose to trade God’s truth for a lie. Mankind, still today, chooses to worship and serve itself and its passions and desires, and it wants to feed its fleshly lusts. But the only One worthy of being surrendered to is our Creator God Almighty.
