Scripture to Read: Romans 1:3–4
A central truth to our Christian faith is believing that Jesus was and is fully God and fully man. As we learned yesterday, the only way a sinful human can be completely reconciled to our Holy God is through our Lord Jesus Christ, being fully man and God. Romans 1:3 laid out for us the truth that Jesus is fully man as the descendent of David. In Romans 1:4, God reveals to us that Jesus is also fully God, who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through the proclamation,“ who was declared Son of God,” God is not saying Jesus was a created being. Instead, this proclamation of who Jesus is points to the fact that Jesus is the Second Person of the Triune God, as God the Son. Then, through the power of the Holy Spirit (the Third Person of the Triune God), Jesus was resurrected from the dead, defeating the power of death on our behalf. The evidence that Jesus is fully God is seen in His resurrection. By defeating death, Jesus rules and reigns over death and holds the keys to death and hades (Revelation 1:18). It can be challenging to wrap our minds around this truth, that Jesus is fully God and fully man, but we can believe it because God’s Word boldly proclaims this truth. We need to rejoice in this biblical truth daily because by the power, majesty, glory and work of our Lord Jesus Christ we are saved!
