Scripture to Read: Revelation 2:17
As we end this week, our Lord says in Revelation 2:17, “To him who overcomes, to him I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it.” The reference to the “hidden manna” is God’s perfect bread, Jesus Himself. Jesus said of Himself, in John 6:51, “I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.” The reference to the “new name” goes back to Isaiah 62:2, And you will be called by a new name which the mouth of the Lord will designate. The reference to the “white stone” could mean four things. First, the white stone was once used as a ticket to a banquet. As believers, we will one day dine at the banquet table of our King (Luke 13:29). Second, the white stone was used as a sign of friendship. Jesus calls us “friends” in John 15:14-15. Third, the white stone was once used as evidence of having been counted/chosen. As believers, we are God’s called, chosen, and faithful followers (1 Peter 2:9; Revelation 17:14). Finally, the white stone was used in a court of law. Jurors voted for acquittal with a white stone and conviction with a black stone. We have been fully forgiven through Christ (Colossians 2:13-14).
Challenge & Application
1. What did God teach you today about all Christ gives us as His children?
2. How are you living differently knowing all that our Lord has for all of us who overcome?
