Scripture to Read: Joshua 2:11
When the people in Jericho and in all of Canaan heard about all that God had done on behalf of the nation of Israel (Joshua 2:10), God had Rahab share the following with the two spies in Joshua 2:11, “When we heard it, our hearts melted and no courage remained in any man any longer because of you; for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.” The people in Jericho and the rest of the land of Canaan had lost all courage. But Rahab also proclaimed her faith in God when she said, “for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.” Rahab was not proclaiming what the people in Jericho believed, nor what the people in the rest of the land of Canaan believed, but rather what she believed. God confirms her faith in Hebrews 11:31, “By faith Rahab the harlot did not perish along with those who were disobedient, after she had welcomed the spies in peace.” Rahab knew that the God of the Israelites was the One True God, and she was willing to put her life on the line for the spies because of her faith in God. Our faith in the Lord will be and must be tested for us to grow in deeper intimacy with our Lord. That is why God tells us in James 1:2–3, “Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.” Rahab’s faith was tested, and she proved faithful.
