Scripture to Read: Psalm 139:23–24
Remember in yesterday’s devotion how God had led David to describe his hatred for God’s enemies. As we finish Psalm 139 today, we see how God also led David to ask God to examine his heart and motives right after writing about hating God’s enemies. God had David write in Psalm 139:23–24, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; 24 And see if there be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.” God wants us to seek Him daily, and as we do, He will reveal to us the true motives of our hearts. God uses His Word this way, for He tells us in Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” God’s Word penetrates deeply in our lives and shows us “the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” God also uses His Holy Spirit in us to guide us and speak to us daily—that is why we must guard against quenching or grieving His Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19, Ephesians 4:30). The good news is that God is actively at work in our lives every day, and He desires us to walk in a manner that pleases Him (Colossians 1:9–10). When we choose to submit to Him and His Word, we know we’re walking the path of everlasting life.
