Day 7

Scripture to Read: Nehemiah 6:16-19

As we close out this week’s devotions, we read in Nehemiah 6:16 that when all of Nehemiah’s enemies heard the wall had been completed they “lost their confidence; for they recognized that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God.” Nehemiah’s enemies tried, over and over again, to set fear in Nehemiah. They tried to get Nehemiah to lose his confidence and quit. They tried everything they could to get Nehemiah to stop working, but nothing they tried worked. Instead, God’s work was finished and the very ones who thought they could win had now lost their confidence because they saw that God had been working all along. Nehemiah knew God was working, and that is why Nehemiah never gave in to the enemy’s lies and deception. Nehemiah kept his heart focused on God, His Word, and the work God had called him to do. So, did the attacks stop? No, the attacks continued. Tobiah was related by marriage to two “nobles” (Nehemiah 6:17-18), and Tobiah had business dealings with these nobles (Nehemiah 6:18 “bound by oath”). Tobiah and the nobles continually exchanged letters. Also, the nobles would tell Nehemiah about Tobiah’s “good deeds” and then report to Tobiah what Nehemiah would say to them. Tobiah was definitely Nehemiah’s enemy, for he continued writing threatening letters to Nehemiah. Satan is not a quitter. We must remember that we enter the spiritual battlefield daily. Though we will have daily victories, the final battle will not be over until we are called home by our King.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about the battles we face? 2. How will you choose to live, knowing that the final victory will not come until we are called home?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Remember, in last week’s devotions, how God worked in Nehemiah 5 and brought reconciliation to the people of Jerusalem? Since the battle within Jerusalem was reconciled, in Nehemiah 6, we read how the battle from the outside began again. We must always remember that we are never completely out of the battlefield. Even though we may have times...

Day 2

We have so much to learn from what God is teaching us in Nehemiah. As we saw in yesterday’s devotion, Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab and the rest of Nehemiah’s enemies raised their ugly heads seeking to stop the work on the wall and to harm Nehemiah. Nehemiah 6:5-7 declare that Nehemiah’s enemies were continuing to be relentless. Nehemiah...

Day 3

Nehemiah 6:8-9 record for us Nehemiah’s response to the false accusations sent to him by Sanballat. Sanballat had sent his servant to Nehemiah to tell Nehemiah what he planned to do against Nehemiah if Nehemiah would not meet with him and the others. God uses Nehemiah to call out the lie that Sanballat had planned to send to the king. Also, n...

Day 4

We have seen how the spiritual forces of darkness work to get us distracted from doing God’s work. Today the spiritual forces of darkness sought to deceive Nehemiah into doing something that would cause Nehemiah to sin. Nehemiah 6:10-13 lay out for us the next step of deception. Shemaiah was supposedly a prophet of God, for we read in Nehemia...

Day 5

Through Nehemiah 6, we have seen how the spiritual forces of darkness continually try and chip away at our foundation in Christ and His Word. For Nehemiah, Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and others were used by the spiritual forces of darkness to get Nehemiah to sin. Nehemiah, though, continually stuck to the work he knew God had called ...

Day 6

God will always see His will carried out to completion. Nehemiah 6:15 starts with, “So the wall was completed…” The spiritual forces of darkness never stop God’s work. The good news is that God did not have to find someone else to complete the job because Nehemiah stayed on the path that God had led him to walk. Imagine if Nehemiah had allowe...
