Day 4

Scripture to Read: Matthew 7:4

Self-righteousness is a sin that is birthed out of pride and arrogance. A self-righteous person is blind to their own sins and wrongly judges others. God’s Word asks, in Proverbs 20:9, “Who can say, ‘I have cleansed my heart, I am pure from my sin?’” The obvious answer is, “No one!” Again, God’s Word says in 1 John 1:8, “If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.” So, Jesus asks this in Matthew 7:4, “Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye, ’and behold, the log is in your own eye?” Jesus wants us to know that we have no right to point out someone else’s sins when we have not rightly dealt with our sins. Again, God’s Word says in Proverbs 14:12, “There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” When we are blind to our sins we think we’re on the right path, but God tells us we’re on the path that leads to death. Sin always results in death (Romans 6:23, James 1:15), so any course other than the path God has for us to walk each day is going to lead us to death. When we are in constant fellowship with our Lord Jesus Christ and bathing our minds and hearts with His Word, then we’ll be a usable tool in His hands to come alongside and invest well in each other.

Challenge & Application

· How does self-righteousness get in the way of being a usable tool for God? · What must we do each day to guard against self-righteousness?

Day 1

Probably one of the most misquoted Bible verses in Scripture is found in the Sermon on the Mount. When a brother or sister in Christ is seeking to hold another brother or sister in Christ accountable to an area of their life where there is a sin, often the one being held accountable will defend themselves by quoting Matthew 7:1. Jesus said in...

Day 2

Judging others is sinful when the judgment is made in a critical, condemning, and condescending way. Jesus tells us in Matthew 7:2, “For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.” This is a great reminder we must commit to memory. The moment we feel like we need to judge someone on ...

Day 3

We continue to walk through Matthew 7 and what Jesus said about judging others. Jesus said, in Matthew 7:3, “Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?” Here, we see Jesus’ challenge to make sure we examine ourselves before we start to judge someone else. God the Holy Spirit ...

Day 5

Jesus clarifies for us what He has in mind about how we are to judge another brother or sister in Christ. Jesus said in Matthew 7:5, “You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.” Over the past four days, we have examined (verse by verse) what Jesus said in M...

Day 6

God has spoken to us over the last five devotions about how to judge each other in a manner that is pleasing to Him. Jesus then said this in Matthew 7:6, “Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.” In judging others, we must have Go...

Day 7

When we consider what our Lord has taught us about judging others, we know that we must have a clean heart before we even begin to come alongside a brother or sister in Christ. God tells us in Galatians 6:1–2, “Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one loo...
