Scripture to Read: Matthew 6:18
Jesus closed Matthew 6:18 by saying, “so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.” We know God sees everything, but what a great reminder that we fast to please, praise, honor, and glorify Him. Our lives do not belong to us. God tells us in Romans 6:22, “But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life.” We have been set free from sin, and now we are bondslaves of our Lord Jesus Christ. We must live our lives as slaves of righteousness because He has given us the fullness of His righteousness through His Holy Spirit living in us (Romans 6:18). To live our lives any other way robs us of the fullness of knowing Christ as intimately as possible. Fasting is a great way to get back on track. If fasting is a regular part of your life, then continue so you grow even more. But if fasting is not a regular part of your life, then start—use that extra time to fellowship with our Lord to memorize His Word so you have a better handle on “the sword of the Spirit” (Ephesians 6:17). Our reward from our Heavenly Father is knowing Him and His Word more intimately and being a more usable vessel for the good works He has for us to walk in each day (Ephesians 2:10).
