Scripture to Read: Genesis 27:1-29
No matter what we think, do, or say, God’s will, plan, and purpose will be fulfilled. We cannot stop God’s will, but we can miss His will when we decide to do things our way. God had already made the promise to Rebekah in Genesis 25:23 “Two nations are in your womb; And two peoples will be separated from your body; And one people shall be stronger than the other; And the older shall serve the younger.” So, Rebekah knew that the older son (Esau) would serve the younger son (Jacob). So, fast forward to Genesis 27:1-29 and we see the deception of Rebekah and Jacob unfold and take place. We might question why Rebekah and Jacob would set the plan of deception into action when God had already promised Rebekah that the older son would serve the younger son. The answer to this question is easy, both Rebekah and Jacob had a sin nature and they submitted to their sin nature instead of God’s perfect plan. We’ll never know how God would have fulfilled His promise to Rebekah if Rebekah had decided to trust God’s promise to her completely. All we know is that Rebekah and Jacob decided to do things their fleshly way, according to their sin nature, and the deception of Isaac took place. When we choose to do things according to our sin nature, the consequence will bring death (James 1:13-15). We must choose to listen to our Lord and believe His promises, even when the fulfillment of His promises seems impossible.
Challenge & Application
1. What did God teach you today about His perfect will and the sin nature we have to die to each day?
2. What are you doing to make sure you are walking in the fullness of God’s will and not your own?
