Scripture to Read: Luke 7:31–35
As God led Luke to write, we find this recorded in Luke 7:31–35, “To what then shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like? 32 They are like children who sit in the market place and call to one another, and they say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’ 33 For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’ 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ 35 Yet wisdom is vindicated by all her children.” The first part of what Jesus said in verses 31–32 carries with it the idea that those whose hearts are cold and hard will always be ready to criticize anything that is shared. The religious leaders of Jesus’ day criticized John the Baptist and were unwilling to be baptized with a baptism of repentance. They considered themselves already clean in God’s sight. Then, with Jesus, they hated all He did and all He said and only looked for a way to kill Him. When it came to John the Baptist, the religious leaders thought of him as either being some kind of insane person or that he must be demon-possessed. But then, they considered Jesus to be a drunk and a friend of sinners, but Jesus then said that true wisdom is revealed through those who walk in it (James 3:17–18).
Challenge & Application
Why do people fall into the trap of criticizing God and His Word?
Where is true wisdom found and how do we walk in it?
