Scripture to Read: Luke 7:20–23
We know that the Bible, God’s Holy Spirit in us, is the best source for finding answers to our questions in life. John the Baptist knew Jesus was the best source for answers to his questions. God had Luke record this in Luke 7:20–23, “When the men came to Him, they said, ‘John the Baptist has sent us to You, to ask, ‘Are You the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?’ 21 At that very time He cured many people of diseases and afflictions and evil spirits; and He gave sight to many who were blind. 22 And He answered and said to them, ‘Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have the gospel preached to them. 23 Blessed is he who does not take offense at Me.’” John needed a little more proof that Jesus was the Messiah. Jesus began to perform miracles, knowing that each miracle was prophesied about Him in the Book of Isaiah. Jesus healed the blind, as prophesied in Isaiah 61:1 and Isaiah 35:5. Jesus healed the lame, as prophesied in Isaiah 35:6. Jesus healed the deaf, as prophesied in Isaiah 35:5. Jesus raised the dead, as prophesied in Isaiah 26:19. Jesus preached the gospel to the poor, as prophesied in Isaiah 61:1. Many Jews took offense at Jesus because they wanted political deliverance from Rome, but Jesus came to deliver them spiritually.
