Day 1

Scripture to Read: Luke 6:20

Jesus had just chosen His twelve disciples, and after that, we read in Luke 6:17–18, “Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place; and there was a large crowd of His disciples, and a great throng of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon, 18 who had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases…” Because the location differs from what is mentioned in Matthew 5:1, “When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him,” theologians are divided on whether these are two different events. But many believe that because Jesus’ main emphasis was the Kingdom of God, He would have taught a similar message on more than one occasion. God had Luke record in Luke 6:20, “And turning His gaze toward His disciples, He began to say, ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.’” The poverty Jesus referred to was that of those who were “poor in spirit,” as God had Matthew record it in Matthew 5:3. The “poor in spirit” recognize they are spiritually impoverished. Poverty of spirit comes as the Holy Spirit works in our hearts (John 16:8–11) and we respond through repentance, confession, and surrendering to Christ as Lord. Once someone responds to Christ, then they receive “the kingdom of God.” God’s kingdom is not a possibility for those who choose to remain “poor in spirit” due to their refusal to repent, confess, and surrender to Christ.

Challenge & Application

Why must people realize that they are spiritually poor before they can ever surrender to Christ as Lord? How did you come to the point of realizing your spiritual poverty and your need for Christ to fill you with His riches?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Jesus continued to teach, and so we read in Luke 6:21, “Blessed are you who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.” Jesus described how blessed are those who passionately pursue Him. God had Matthew record this in Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for t...

Day 3

For every follower of Christ, the words Jesus shared next can be difficult. God had Luke record in Luke 6:22–23, “Blessed are you when men hate you, and ostracize you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of Man. 23 Be glad in that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For in the sam...

Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep. 26 Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for their fathers used t...

Day 5

Jesus began to lay out how to handle personal relationships. Most people, then and now, treat others the way they have been treated. But God had Luke record what Jesus said we must do, as we read Luke 6:27–28, “But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistrea...

Jesus also spoke about accepting certain evils being done to us. We read in Luke 6:29–31, “Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your coat, do not withhold your shirt from him either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back. 31 Treat others the ...

Day 7

Jesus had more to teach, and so God had Luke record in Luke 6:32–36, “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 If you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what cred...
