Scripture to Read: Luke 4:42–44
We know Jesus is God, but when He walked here on earth, He was also 100% man. God had Luke record this in Luke 4:42–44, “When day came, Jesus left and went to a secluded place; and the crowds were searching for Him, and came to Him and tried to keep Him from going away from them. 43 But He said to them, ‘I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose.’ 44 So He kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.” Jesus getting away is a great reminder that we all need time to be refreshed, renewed, and restored by spending alone time with our Heavenly Father and immersing ourselves in His Word. We must continually draw near to Him and allow Him to fill us with His Spirit (Ephesians 5:18) so that we can continue to serve Him well. Just as people came looking for Jesus, there will always be things and people in our lives seeking to capture our attention, but we must be disciplined not to allow those people or things to rob us of our time alone with our Lord and feeding on His Word. God definitely has works for us to do (Ephesians 2:10, Philippians 2:13), but we cannot do them well if we are not walking in the fullness of Him and His Spirit in us. Just as Jesus came to “preach the kingdom of God,” we too have been commanded by our Lord to do the same (Matthew 28:19–20, Acts 1:8).
