Scripture to Read: Luke 4:20–22
Jesus had just read from Isaiah 61:1–2, and as was customary, He was expected to provide interpretation and teaching based on the reading. God had Luke record the following in Luke 4:20–22 “And He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, ‘Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.’ 22 And all were speaking well of Him, and wondering at the gracious words which were falling from His lips; and they were saying, ’Is this not Joseph’s son?’” Jesus provided the people with the following facts. First, that God led Isaiah to write this prophecy about Him. Second, that this prophecy was being fulfilled in their presence. Jesus continued to teach and that is why God had Luke record the people’s reaction to Jesus’s teaching. Jesus spoke with words that were full of grace. First, the people were overwhelmed by the goodness and grace of God in the announcement Jesus made that the Messiah was with them. But then, after their initial amazement, they began to resent that “Joseph’s son” could claim to be the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy. People without a relationship with God through Christ may initially respond to the Gospel with joy and amazement when they first hear it. Jesus spoke of this in Matthew 13:3–23, Mark 4:3–20, and Luke 8:4–15 in the parable of the sower and the seed. Therefore, a heart must be ready to receive God’s truth to be transformed by it.
Challenge & Application
Why were the people initially amazed at what Christ was teaching them?
Why did the people’s attitude change? (Read through Matthew 13:18–23, Mark 4:14–20, and Luke 8:11–15 for more insight.)
