Scripture to Read: Luke 15:5-7
The response of the shepherd after finding the lost sheep is so precious. Jesus said in Luke 15:5–7, “When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ 7 I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.” Jesus made it clear how important this one lost sheep was to the shepherd. The shepherd not only rejoiced, but he picked up the sheep and carried it home. Then, he called together all of his friends and neighbors to proclaim to them this incredibly great news: that he had found his lost sheep. Christ is our Shepherd, and when one lost sinner willingly turns away from their sin and surrenders to Him as Lord and Savior, He and all who are in heaven rejoice over this one lost soul being saved. God the Father, through Christ Jesus our Lord, wants us to fully understand how much He values the souls of all mankind. The joy over one person willingly surrendering to Christ is far greater than the satisfaction of those who never wandered off. We need to see that in Luke 15:7, there is an incredible celebration because of the act of repentance. For every sinner who turns to know and follow Jesus, may we also rejoice in the same way as all of heaven does.
