Scripture to Read: John 8:8–9
After Jesus spoke this to the Pharisees, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her,” Jesus did not say anything else to them. Then, we read in John 8:8–9, Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9 When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court. Jesus went back to writing on the ground. Again, it would be interesting to know what Jesus wrote, but God did not see fit to lead the Apostle John to record what Jesus wrote. Therefore, God gave us exactly what we need to know. Once the Pharisees heard Jesus’ words, they began leaving, one by one. It is interesting that they did not all leave as a group, the same way they had arrived, but left one by one. Maybe it was those with the less hardened hearts who left first, and those whose hearts were more hardened finally left as well. Jesus’ words had penetrated the hearts of the Pharisees, which is no surprise. God tells us in Hebrews 4:12, For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. God incarnate had spoken, and the thoughts and intentions of the hearts of the Pharisees had been judged.
