Scripture to Read: John 8:6b–7
Surely, the Pharisees thought they had found a way to test Jesus and that Jesus would fail their test. As the Pharisees waited for Jesus’ response, we read in John 8:6b–7, But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground. 7 But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up, and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” Initially, Jesus said nothing. Jesus bent over and began writing on the ground. There is no record in Scripture of what Jesus wrote. Some think Jesus may have started to write out the sins that the Pharisees were guilty of, but if He had done that, that probably would have silenced the Pharisees. But as God’s Word tells us, the Pharisees were not being silent at all but “persisted” in questioning our Lord to answer their question. Our Lord never lost His cool. Jesus never lashed out at the Pharisees’ self-righteous attitude, though He could have. Instead, Jesus stood up and gently challenged the Pharisees to check their own hearts before they started throwing stones. God tells us in James 5:19–20, My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. So, Jesus desires that we lead sinners to turn away from their sins to save their souls from death. This should be every believer’s desire.
Challenge & Application
• What was the desire of the Pharisees, and why did their plan fail?
• What is our Lord’s desire for those caught in sin, and how does He want to use us to fulfill His desire?
