Scripture to Read: John 6:28–31
When Jesus challenged the crowd to seek after the food that gives them eternal life, the people responded in John 6:28, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” The crowd wanted to know what good works they needed to do to please God. People today are still trying to please God their way. Everyone is looking for the magic formula to live how they want and still have eternal life. But Jesus told them in John 6:29, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.” Jesus quickly told the people that it was not about them doing anything for God but that eternal life was only possible if they chose to trust (place their faith) in Him as the Messiah sent by God the Father—the same is true today. Everyone must choose to place their faith in Jesus alone as the Christ/Messiah of this world and to know that Jesus is God the Son sent here by God the Father. However, the people wanted more evidence from Jesus that He was sent by God the Father (John 6:30). Remember that these same people who saw Jesus multiply five loaves and two fish to feed over five thousand the day before now asked for more signs. They even mentioned the manna (John 6:31) God had provided for the Israelites in the wilderness after being delivered from Egypt (as recorded in Exodus). With all the evidence we have today, there should be zero doubt that Jesus is Lord.
Challenge & Application
• Why do people think they can do their good works and that it will be enough to please God, and why is it not (Hebrews 11:6)?
• How are you helping others to know that they must place their faith in Jesus alone for their lives to be changed?
