Day 7

Scripture to Read: John 6:16–21

Jesus had taught the disciples a valuable lesson on trusting in God’s abundant provision. But, just like us, what Jesus had taught them did not feed into all areas of their lives. We know this because Jesus tested the disciples’ faith again. In John 6:16–21, we see that the disciples went ahead of Jesus, got in their boat, and started rowing across the sea of Capernaum. We find the reason the disciples left ahead of Jesus recorded in Matthew 14:22–23 and also in Mark 6:45–46, which says, Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to Bethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowd away. 46 After bidding them farewell, He left for the mountain to pray. Jesus sent the people away and then went to fellowship with God the Father. Jesus never did anything without spending time in prayer with His Father. Then, we read in John 6:19 that the disciples “had rowed about three or four miles.” What the disciples did not expect was to see Jesus walking on the sea and coming toward them, which, of course, scared all of them. Though they had already seen Jesus perform incredible miracles, this miracle was totally unexpected. What we must remember is that our Lord is limitless in power and can do anything He wills to do. We should never be surprised when Jesus tests our faith in Him. He wants us to see the fullness of who He is so that we can see the fullness of who we are in Him.

Challenge & Application

• What did God teach you through the example of Jesus spending time with the Father in prayer after a long day? • Why should we never be surprised when Jesus tests our faith in Him?

We know Jesus was testing Philip and the rest of His disciples when He asked Philip where they could buy enough bread to feed the huge crowd that was following. Philip did not hesitate to answer Jesus, for he told Jesus in John 6:7, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, for everyone to receive a little.” To understan...

We read in John 6:12–13, When they were filled, He *said to His disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments so that nothing will be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five bar...
