Scripture to Read: John 6:14–15
Remember that when the crowd followed Jesus, they did so according to John 6:2, “because they saw the signs which He was performing on those who were sick.” The people loved what they had seen Christ do and wanted more of it, because now we read in John 6:14–15, Therefore when the people saw the sign which He had performed, they said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.” 15 So Jesus, perceiving that they were intending to come and take Him by force to make Him king, withdrew again to the mountain by Himself alone. The people saw Jesus’ power and even called Him “the Prophet,” whom Moses had prophesied about in Deuteronomy 18:15 and Deuteronomy 18:18. But Jesus also realized the motives of the people’s hearts, for the people were going to take
Jesus and make Him their earthly King. But we know Jesus did not come to establish an earthly kingdom, but He came to set all spiritual prisoners free from our spiritual blindness and bondage due to our sinful natures. Jesus never deviated from the Father’s will. Remember that Jesus had said in John 4:34, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work.” This is a great reminder that we should never deviate from the Father’s will either. We must pursue our fellowship with our Lord and His Word knowing He has told us in Ephesians 5:17, So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
Challenge & Application
• What did the crowd want to do with Jesus after being fed, and why did they want to do this?
• How did Jesus respond when He knew what the people wanted, and how should we respond each day to God’s will?
