Day 7

Scripture to Read: John 5:45–47

The Jews in Jesus’ day thought that being a descendant of Abraham automatically put them in right standing with God, no matter how they lived their lives. God had given His Law to the Israelites through Moses, and we can see the Gospel of our Lord throughout the first five Books of the Bible. So, that is why Jesus challenged the Jews by telling them in John 5:45–46, “Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me.” Jesus told them that Moses had written about Him in the Bible's first five Books (the Pentateuch). Jesus said that Moses was the one who accused them because if they had believed in the Scriptures that God led Moses to write, then they would have believed everything Jesus had said and done so far. Jesus said this because He knew that in every Hebrew family, from ages 5–10, every Hebrew child was taught the Bible's first five Books (the Pentateuch). Then, from ages 10–13, those Hebrew children would study the Mishnah (the Hebrew commentary of the Pentateuch). So, these Jews knew God’s Word, but as Jesus said in John 5:47, But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?” Though these Jews knew God’s Word, they never believed (trusted in, clung to, or relied on) God’s Word. Knowing God and His Word is never enough. Faith must be applied for lives to change!

Challenge & Application

• What was Jesus’ challenge to the Jews, and why was His challenge appropriate for them? • When we consider all the biblical resources available today, how could our Lord challenge us?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Since we are Christians, our testimony is a vital part of what we use to share with others how Christ has changed and is continually changing our lives. Our Lord Jesus Christ spoke of His testimony as well. Jesus said in John 5:31–32, “If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not true. 32 There is another who testifies of Me, and I kn...

Day 2

Jesus continued to say in John 5:34, “But the testimony which I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved.” Jesus told the religious leaders that the testimony given on His behalf was not merely from man, which meant His testimony had the highest validation! Jesus added that the reason He was even there was that...

Day 3

Jesus was making sure the Jews knew that God the Father was the One who sent Him and Who testified about Him. Jesus gave the Jews a loving rebuke as He told them in John 5:37–38, “And the Father who sent Me, He has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form. 38 You do not have His word abiding in you, for ...

Day 4

We must never forget that every person on the face of the earth living without Christ is void of His Word and their spirit is absent of life. That was the problem with the Jews that Jesus was addressing in John 5. Jesus told them in John 5:39–40, “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that...

Day 5

God’s Word (the Scriptures) continually testify about our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus even said in Luke 24:25–27, “O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?” 27 Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He ...

Day 6

Jesus continued to share the truth with the Jews and let them know He was not there to seek their approval. Jesus told them in John 5:41, “I do not receive glory from men.” As Christians, we must continually guard against seeking man’s favor over God. When we fall prey to needing man’s approval, we will compromise our walk with Christ. God us...
