Scripture to Read: John 18:25–27
Peter and John were watching as Jesus was questioned by the high priest and then struck by the officer. Neither Peter nor John did anything at this point. Then, we read in John 18:25–27, “Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?” He denied it, and said, “I am not.” 26 One of the slaves of the high priest, being a relative of the one whose ear Peter cut off, *said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” 27 Peter then denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed.” Here, we read how Peter denied our Lord two more times. As soon as the third denial came out of Peter’s mouth, “immediately a rooster crowed.” Though the Apostle John does not record Peter’s reaction after the rooster crowed, we find his reaction recorded in Matthew 26:75, Mark 14:72, and Luke 22:61–62. We read in Matthew 26:75, “And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, “Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.” Then, we read in Luke 22:61–62, “The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, “Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” 62 And he went out and wept bitterly.” Both Matthew and Luke record how Peter wept bitterly. Peter was broken, but the good news was that healing from our Lord would come.
Challenge & Application
• After Peter denied our Lord three times, he was broken; so, how does brokenness before our Lord bring healing from Him?
• How have you experienced brokenness and healing from our Lord?
