Scripture to Read: John 18:1
Jesus finished His prayer in John 17, and then He and His disciples headed toward the garden of Gethsemane. Though God had the Apostle John record the Lord’s prayer in John 17, He did not have him record the Lord’s prayer in the garden of Gethsemane. But to avoid missing what our Lord went through before He was arrested, we must examine His prayer in the garden. We read in Matthew 26:36, 38, 39, 42, and 44, “Then Jesus *came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and *said to His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 38 Then He *said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with Me.” 39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.” 42 He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done.” 44 And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more.” We also find our Lord’s prayer recorded in two other gospels, in Mark 14:32–42 and Luke 22:40–46. For those who doubt if our Lord was 100% man, His prayer in the garden of Gethsemane proves the agony He was in and that He wasn’t looking forward to what He had to face for all mankind.
