Scripture to Read: John 12:27
Jesus continued to share with Philip, Andrew, and the others who were present at the time. We read in John 12:27, “Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour.” The fact that Jesus expresses the trouble within His soul reminds us that He is fully human and fully God. God does not have the Apostle John record the prayer of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, but from this passage in John 12, we see Jesus’ troubled soul. Jesus knew He was sent by God the Father to be the worthy, sinless, perfect sacrifice for the sins of all mankind for all time. Jesus was and is the spotless offering and sacrifice before God the Father. He is also the fragrant aroma (Ephesians 5:2) before God the Father’s throne of grace on behalf of everyone who surrenders to Him as Lord. But being 100% man, Jesus also knew that what He was about to go through would be the greatest suffering He would ever face for all time—not just the physical suffering He would go through, but the spiritual suffering. Jesus had to endure the fullness of the wrath of God the Father. Therefore, God the Father would pour out on Jesus the fullness of His wrath since Jesus had to take it on Himself to pay the full price for all sins (Romans 5:9, 1 Thessalonians 1:10, 1 Thessalonians 5:9)! But Jesus knew this was the purpose for which He came.
