Scripture to Read: John 12:12–16
Jesus’ day drew near, and He entered Jerusalem as the anointed King. We read in John 12:12–16, On the next day the large crowd who had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began to shout, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel.” 14 Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written, 15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.” 16 These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things to Him. In this passage of Scripture, Jesus fulfilled prophecies that had been written about Him in the Old Testament. The crowd greeted Jesus with words from the Messianic Psalm 118:25–26. When kings would enter into cities, though, they rode on a war horse, designating their rule over the people. But Jesus rode on a donkey’s colt (John 12:15) as a fulfillment of the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9. Jesus also demonstrated the character of His kingdom. His kingdom was a spiritual kingdom, not an earthly kingdom. He came as the Prince of Peace. The people wanted a king to free them from the Roman Empire, but Jesus came to free them from their bondage to sin and death. Though no one understood yet, they would.
