Scripture to Read: John 12:7–8
Jesus quickly responded to Judas’ comment that the perfume was not being sold to take care of the poor. We read in John 12:7–8, Therefore Jesus said, “Let her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of My burial. 8 For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.” Jesus’ response is perfect because Jesus already knew Judas’ heart and motives. However, Jesus does reveal something significant in His response about His upcoming crucifixion. The people who were there that day did not understand it at the time, but we need to take special note that Jesus made reference to His burial. Jesus knew that God the Father was using Mary to anoint Him, not only as High Priest and King but also in preparation for His death. Jesus even tells everyone that the poor will always be with them but that He will not. Jesus, throughout the book of John so far, told His followers about His upcoming death, burial, and resurrection. He took advantage of the moment in John 12 to say something about it again, seeking to prepare His followers for what was coming in just a few short days. Our Lord speaks clearly into our lives every day as well. He uses His Word and His Holy Spirit in us. If we’re struggling to understand what our Lord is speaking to us, it is not that He is not speaking clearly—the problem is that we have allowed things to cloud our minds and hearts. We must cast aside all distractions and listen intently.
Challenge & Application
• Why was Jesus’ response perfect in every way?
• How do we prepare to hear from our Lord each day, and what must we do not to miss what He teaches us?
