Scripture to Read: John 1:6–8
God had John share a little about John the Baptist as we read in John 1:6–8, There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light. We know John the Baptist, by physical terms, was about six months older than our Lord Jesus, according to Luke 1:26–45. BTW, those who don’t believe that life begins until birth would have a hard time explaining John the Baptist’s reaction to the sound of Mary’s voice in Luke 1:41–42. When John the Baptist was around 30, remember he was just six months older than our Lord in earthly years, he was called by God (Luke 3:2) to be His messenger. According to Luke 3:3, John went all around the Jordan region, “preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.” So, God had John confirm the same fact that He had sent John the Baptist. John the Baptist testified that our Lord Jesus Christ is the Light of the world (John 8:12, John 9:5). God’s call on John’s life is much the same as God’s call on our lives. We have been called to make disciples of Christ (Matthew 28:18–20) so that everyone has a chance to put their faith in Christ alone as Lord and Savior. May we be as zealous as John the Baptist in sharing Christ with others.
