Day 7

Scripture to Read: Genesis 49:28-33

We opened Genesis 49 with Jacob (Israel) gathering his sons to speak a blessing or a loving rebuke over them, which was also a blessing. As we finish Genesis 49, we read how Jacob (Israel) was gathered to his people through his death. After Jacob blessed each of his sons, we read in Genesis 49:28, "This is what their father said to them as he blessed them, blessing each with the blessing suitable to him." So, according to God's Word, each son received a blessing that was fit for them. Some of the sons heard of the consequences of their sin, while others were told of their need for God's grace. But Joseph saw the plan and provision of God throughout his journey. For Jacob, the journey had been a long one. Since the prophecy in Genesis 25:23 about Jacob and Esau, we have seen many ups and downs in Jacob's life. Through his deception and running for his life, we have seen Jacob's low points. Yet, we saw Jacob reconciled with Esau and how Jacob was preserved through the famine because of his son Joseph. As Jacob's life comes to a close, it provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the faithfulness of God. From the time Jacob was conceived to his final breath, God was the One who was in control of his life. The same is true for our lives. From even before our birth to when we draw our last breath, God is in control. May the life and death of Jacob remind us of God's truth, that He's always in control!

Challenge & Application

1. How have you seen God in control over Jacob’s life in Genesis 25-49? 2. How does knowing God is in control of life and death help us understand and deal with death?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

This week we read in Genesis 49 about Jacob's (Israel's) death. Before Jacob died, he brought his sons before him to speak a blessing or a loving rebuke. Day 2

Yesterday, we read of the consequences of Reuben, Simeon, and Levi's sin. Today we read what Jacob spoke to Judah. Remember (in Genesis 38) how God showed us the spiritual blindness that comes from sin as Judah went into his daughter-in-law Tamar, thinking she was a prostitute. But then God revealed to us a compassionate, humble Judah in Gene...

Day 3

As we continue in Genesis 49, we read how Jacob (Israel) handed down a blessing or pronouncement on two more of his sons. In Jacob's words to Zebulun, Jacob says, in Genesis 49:13, "Zebulun shall dwell at the shore of the sea; he shall become a haven for ships, and his border shall be at Sidon." While this blessing is not easy to interpret, h...

Day 5

So far in the blessings Jacob (Israel) has handed his sons, we have witnessed the reality of sin and the need for God's grace. Yesterday, the reality of sin was on display as Dan and Gad were told the division they and their descendants would face. Today, we see the grace of God on display through the blessings given to Asher and Naphtali. To...

Day 6

Today, we examine the blessing that God led Jacob to give to Joseph. Though Jacob (Israel) once thought Joseph was dead, it is now Jacob facing death, and he is blessed with being able to share parting words with his son, Joseph.
