Day 4

Scripture to Read: Genesis 49:16-19

Yesterday, we took a look at what God had spoken through Jacob to two more of his sons, Zebulun and Issachar. Today, we consider another pair of Jacob's sons and his blessings given to them. The first son we read about is Dan. Jacob's blessing to Dan is found in Genesis 49:16-17, "Dan shall judge his people as one of the tribes of Israel. 17 Dan shall be a serpent in the way, a viper by the path, that bites the horse's heels so that his rider falls backward." What starts well doesn't end well for Dan. Dan is described in snakelike terms. Since Satan is called the serpent in Genesis 3, Dan being compared to a snake is not a good thing. In Judges 18, these words are brought to light as Dan's descendants attack Laish. While Dan attacks, his brother Gad and Gad's descendants are told that they will be overtaken in Genesis 49:19, "Raiders shall raid Gad, but he shall raid at their heels." As Gad is attacked, he will return with attacks of his own. Amid the division foreseen, Genesis 49:18 is a cry for hope, "I wait for your salvation, O LORD." As Jacob (Israel) shared these words with his sons, he cried out to the LORD for His salvation. Jacob (Israel) knew the only answer to such division and fighting was the salvation found in God. As Jacob neared the end of his life, he fought the good fight because he had waited upon the salvation of the LORD. We must fight the good fight daily as well.

Challenge & Application

1. What does Jacob’s response in Genesis 49:18 tell us about how he felt in giving his sons such pronouncements? 2. As you fight against temptation each day, how do you remember the salvation of the LORD in your life?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

This week we read in Genesis 49 about Jacob's (Israel's) death. Before Jacob died, he brought his sons before him to speak a blessing or a loving rebuke. As we read Genesis 49:1-7, Jacob's words are recorded to his first three sons, Reuben, Simon, and Levi. Reuben was told that while he was meant to be "preeminent in dignity and preeminent in...

Day 2

Yesterday, we read of the consequences of Reuben, Simeon, and Levi's sin. Today we read what Jacob spoke to Judah. Remember (in Genesis 38) how God showed us the spiritual blindness that comes from sin as Judah went into his daughter-in-law Tamar, thinking she was a prostitute. But then God revealed to us a compassionate, humble Judah in Gene...

Day 3

As we continue in Genesis 49, we read how Jacob (Israel) handed down a blessing or pronouncement on two more of his sons. In Jacob's words to Zebulun, Jacob says, in Genesis 49:13, "Zebulun shall dwell at the shore of the sea; he shall become a haven for ships, and his border shall be at Sidon." While this blessing is not easy to interpret, h...

Day 5

So far in the blessings Jacob (Israel) has handed his sons, we have witnessed the reality of sin and the need for God's grace. Yesterday, the reality of sin was on display as Dan and Gad were told the division they and their descendants would face. Today, we see the grace of God on display through the blessings given to Asher and Naphtali. To...

Day 6

Today, we examine the blessing that God led Jacob to give to Joseph. Though Jacob (Israel) once thought Joseph was dead, it is now Jacob facing death, and he is blessed with being able to share parting words with his son, Joseph. Day 7

We opened Genesis 49 with Jacob (Israel) gathering his sons to speak a blessing or a loving rebuke over them, which was also a blessing. As we finish Genesis 49, we read how Jacob (Israel) was gathered to his people through his death.
