Scripture to Read: Genesis 14:17-20
As we continue to walk through Genesis 14, we are introduced to Melchizedek. Although there is more we could study about Melchizedek, read Hebrews 5, 6, and 7 to learn more about him. One detail worth noting from Hebrews 7:17 is that Jesus Christ, the King, and High Priest, is described as one “in the order of Melchizedek.” So, the order of Melchizedek leads us to Jesus Christ, and the words of Melchizedek lead us to the worship of God. Upon Abram’s successful rescue mission, Melchizedek takes the opportunity to bless Abram. We read in Genesis 14:20 who Melchizedek credits with the victory, “and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” God alone is given the glory because He is the One who gave Abram and his men the ability to rescue Lot and defeat their enemies. God was the One who guided and gifted Abram with men and a strategy to pursue their enemies. God was the One who delivered Abram’s enemies into his hand. The only correct response to this rescue mission was to give God the glory and credit for their victory. The same is true for us. When we overcome attacks from the enemy and have victory over sin, it is because it is by the power of God. God reminds us in Ephesians 6:10 that we must be strong in Him and the strength of His might. Our very salvation is only by the power and grace of God through faith in Christ. We must choose to give glory to God in our victories every day.
