Day 7

Scripture to Read: Genesis 12:1-9

In Genesis 12:1-9, we have seen God appear and have heard him speak to Abram. The LORD has promised to Abram offspring and a land this offspring would inherit. As we see now and will recognize in the coming chapters in Genesis, these promises do not find their fulfillment immediately. Does that mean God would not be faithful to His promises? Not at all! Likewise, we find later in the Bible that Abram’s hope was not set merely on a physical land that his offspring would live. He didn’t ultimately despair when his time on earth came without being in the land of promise. Why? Because Abram had his eyes looking forward to something greater. Hebrews 11:10 states this, “For he [Abram] was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.” Abram’s hope did not rest in this earth. Therefore, by faith Abram trusted the LORD to fulfill His promise while knowing His promise would extend beyond this life. He was looking forward to a heavenly city and the purpose of it all was a relationship with God (Hebrews 11:16). Abram is commended in Hebrews 11 because the faith He showed was a faith that God revealed to him, that His ultimate promise would extend beyond this life. We find this in the gospel. Our problem is not merely physical but spiritual. We are sinners who deserve hell. God in His grace has sent Jesus Christ as the promised Messiah so that we could receive eternal life by faith in Him and dwell with Him in eternity in a heavenly city. The question to ask yourself is, “Do you know where you will dwell?”

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about where we should set our hopes? 2. How are you living with eternity in mind?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

As we conclude Genesis 11 today, we should come to the text with the question, “What is next in God’s plan?” After confusing the language and spreading out sinful humanity because they had sought to make a name for themselves, what was God going to do next? He was going to display His grace. Just as He had judged humanity by confusing the lan...

Day 2

Introduced to Abram in yesterday’s devotional, today marks the start for the story of Abram. Yet, the central figure in the story of Abram is not the man himself; the central person is God. The opening verses make this clear in the call of God to Abram. God does call Abram to go and follow Him in obedience to a foreign land but notice what Go...

Day 3

As we continue in Genesis 12, we find out, though the blessing of Abram served the purpose to bless others, not everyone would receive the blessing. The LORD tells Abram this when He says, “I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed” (v. 3). For those who...

Day 4

After hearing the call and command of God to Abram in the first three verses of Genesis 12, today we look at the response of Abram. As God told Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you” (v. 1), we see in today’s passage Abram obeyed that command. Verse 4 says it plainly, “So Abram ...

Day 5

Yesterday, we saw the response of Abram to God’s call for him to leave his country and to go to a land the LORD would show him. Not knowing where he was going, by faith Abram set out with his family and possessions. Today, we see God fulfill His word as He shows Abram the land. Notice what land the LORD gives and who He promises it to. The la...

Day 6

In yesterday’s devotional, we heard the promise of God to give the offspring of Abram a land. We also observed Abram had yet to have offspring and the land promised was currently being occupied by the Canaanites. Rather than responding in unbelief to the LORD’s promise, Abram built an altar where the LORD had appeared to him. Today, in Genesi...
