Day 5

Scripture to Read: Genesis 12:7

Yesterday, we saw the response of Abram to God’s call for him to leave his country and to go to a land the LORD would show him. Not knowing where he was going, by faith Abram set out with his family and possessions. Today, we see God fulfill His word as He shows Abram the land. Notice what land the LORD gives and who He promises it to. The land the LORD is promising to give is a land that “At that time the Canaanites were in the land” (v. 6). The people the LORD promised to give the land to were the offspring of Abram, “To your offspring I will give this land.” (v. 7). To be promised a land that is currently inhabited by another and for it to be promised to children who have yet to be birthed seems to leave Abram in a bleak condition. However, we cannot miss the fact of how Abram is given these promises. Verse 7 informs us, “Then the LORD appeared to Abram”. The LORD did not give him these promises from afar and impersonally. No, the LORD came and appeared to Abram. As God makes this promise to Abram of a land, we read “So he built there an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him” (v. 7). This passage emphasizes the appearance of the LORD to Abram as He makes His promise to him. For us, we see the appearance of God as the Father sent the Son to live among man, die on the cross for our sins, and rise again from the dead. As for those who have responded like Abram to worship the LORD, we have the Spirit who gives us strength to believe and rest in the promises of God that we find in Scripture.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about how the LORD fulfills His Word? 2. What are promises of God you can hold onto in Scripture as you face bleak conditions in this life?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

As we conclude Genesis 11 today, we should come to the text with the question, “What is next in God’s plan?” After confusing the language and spreading out sinful humanity because they had sought to make a name for themselves, what was God going to do next? He was going to display His grace. Just as He had judged humanity by confusing the lan...

Day 2

Introduced to Abram in yesterday’s devotional, today marks the start for the story of Abram. Yet, the central figure in the story of Abram is not the man himself; the central person is God. The opening verses make this clear in the call of God to Abram. God does call Abram to go and follow Him in obedience to a foreign land but notice what Go...

Day 3

As we continue in Genesis 12, we find out, though the blessing of Abram served the purpose to bless others, not everyone would receive the blessing. The LORD tells Abram this when He says, “I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed” (v. 3). For those who...

Day 4

After hearing the call and command of God to Abram in the first three verses of Genesis 12, today we look at the response of Abram. As God told Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you” (v. 1), we see in today’s passage Abram obeyed that command. Verse 4 says it plainly, “So Abram ...

Day 6

In yesterday’s devotional, we heard the promise of God to give the offspring of Abram a land. We also observed Abram had yet to have offspring and the land promised was currently being occupied by the Canaanites. Rather than responding in unbelief to the LORD’s promise, Abram built an altar where the LORD had appeared to him. Today, in Genesi...

Day 7

In Genesis 12:1-9, we have seen God appear and have heard him speak to Abram. The LORD has promised to Abram offspring and a land this offspring would inherit. As we see now and will recognize in the coming chapters in Genesis, these promises do not find their fulfillment immediately. Does that mean God would not be faithful to His promises? ...
