Day 1

Scripture to Read: Genesis 11:27-32

As we conclude Genesis 11 today, we should come to the text with the question, “What is next in God’s plan?” After confusing the language and spreading out sinful humanity because they had sought to make a name for themselves, what was God going to do next? He was going to display His grace. Just as He had judged humanity by confusing the language of all the earth and spreading them throughout the earth, He was going to reveal His grace to all the families of the earth (more to come in Genesis 12). God’s means of accomplishing His plan was through a man named Abram. We are introduced to Abram here at the end of chapter 11. Moving through the list of names in the genealogy, we should take note Abram is in the last set of names mentioned. In the coming chapters and throughout the rest of the Bible, Abram is an important figure. As we will see later, God makes a covenant with Abram and promises Him that Abram’s offspring will be many and they will be given a land. However, our passage highlights a problem: “Now Sarai was barren; she had no child” (v. 30). While God had not yet made His promise to Abram, it is important for us to notice this issue. Why? The reason is because not only will what happens unfold according to the plan of God, things will take place only by the power of God. God will continue the genealogy of Abram (leading to our Lord Jesus Christ) by calling Abram and making a covenant with by which He will provide a son in a seemingly impossible way from a human standpoint. Yet, it happens because not only was it possible, but it was promised by God and would happen by the power of God. The same is true for our salvation as it is only by the promise and power of God that we can find redemption and a relationship through Jesus Christ.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about how God accomplishes His plan? 2. How are you trusting in the promises of God even when human circumstances would tell you otherwise?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 2

Introduced to Abram in yesterday’s devotional, today marks the start for the story of Abram. Yet, the central figure in the story of Abram is not the man himself; the central person is God. The opening verses make this clear in the call of God to Abram. God does call Abram to go and follow Him in obedience to a foreign land but notice what Go...

Day 3

As we continue in Genesis 12, we find out, though the blessing of Abram served the purpose to bless others, not everyone would receive the blessing. The LORD tells Abram this when He says, “I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed” (v. 3). For those who...

Day 4

After hearing the call and command of God to Abram in the first three verses of Genesis 12, today we look at the response of Abram. As God told Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you” (v. 1), we see in today’s passage Abram obeyed that command. Verse 4 says it plainly, “So Abram ...

Day 5

Yesterday, we saw the response of Abram to God’s call for him to leave his country and to go to a land the LORD would show him. Not knowing where he was going, by faith Abram set out with his family and possessions. Today, we see God fulfill His word as He shows Abram the land. Notice what land the LORD gives and who He promises it to. The la...

Day 6

In yesterday’s devotional, we heard the promise of God to give the offspring of Abram a land. We also observed Abram had yet to have offspring and the land promised was currently being occupied by the Canaanites. Rather than responding in unbelief to the LORD’s promise, Abram built an altar where the LORD had appeared to him. Today, in Genesi...

Day 7

In Genesis 12:1-9, we have seen God appear and have heard him speak to Abram. The LORD has promised to Abram offspring and a land this offspring would inherit. As we see now and will recognize in the coming chapters in Genesis, these promises do not find their fulfillment immediately. Does that mean God would not be faithful to His promises? ...
