Scripture to Read: Genesis 11:1-4
God gives us the chronological sequence of events of what happened at the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11. God tells us in Genesis 11:8, So the Lord dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. So, God gave us the details in Genesis 10 of how the different groups of people were divided by families, with different languages, as a result of His judgment at the Tower of Babel. When we examine God's Word, we must constantly compare Scripture with Scripture. With a close examination of Genesis 10:5, Genesis 10:18, Genesis 10:20, and Genesis 10:32, we see how God tells us about the “clans” and “nations” being divided. Then God gives more explanation in Genesis 10:25 that in his days the earth was divided. So in Genesis 10:25, it is obvious God was not referring to a physical division of the earth but a division of the people. God’s Word says in Genesis 11:1, Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. So, at one time there was one language. In Genesis 11:2-4, we find the city was being built to reach the heavens (like they could reach God). The people were focused on self-glorification, making a name for themselves. Remember, Nimrod’s “kingdom” began at Babel, so, Nimrod may have been in charge of the entire project. The city design was for safety and comfort. The people wanted to rest in themselves and not God. The entire city was a recipe for disaster.
Challenge & Application
1. What did God teach you today about all that was wrong with the people and their plans?
2. How do you guard your heart from self-glorification, seeking to “rest” in yourself and thinking you’re worthy enough for God?
