Day 7

Scripture to Read: Exodus 10:1–29

Today, God sent two more plagues on Pharaoh and the Egyptians—the first is the plague of locusts. In Exodus 10:7–9, it seems that Pharaoh’s servants almost persuade Pharaoh to let Israel go. But Pharaoh’s heart remained prideful, as stated in this question in Exodus 10:3, as God had Moses ask Pharaoh, “How long will you refuse to humble yourself before Me?” Pharaoh was full of himself, and though there were little signs of Pharaoh possibly letting the Israelites go, time and time again, Pharaoh’s heart hardened as God sent plague after plague. Pride has destroyed many a person because pride convinces us that we are always right (Proverbs 8:13, 14:12, 16:18, 21:24, 29:23). When the locusts came, they brought such destruction that Pharaoh said, in Exodus 10:16–17, “I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you. 17 Now therefore, please forgive my sin only this once, and make supplication to the Lord your God, that He would only remove this death from me.” One might think that Pharaoh had repented but that would be wrong. Note that even his request is, “please forgive my sin only this once”—as if Pharaoh only needed forgiveness this one time. Pharaoh only wanted relief from the locusts, not repentance of his sin. Then God sent darkness for three days. Pharaoh’s heart was so hard that when he called for Moses, he told him, “Beware, do not see my face again, for in the day you see my face you shall die!” Death was inevitable (Romans 8:6)!

Day 1

We focus on the next nine plagues God sent upon the land of Egypt this week. As a reminder, Pharaoh’s heart was hardened and calloused before God began to use Moses and Aaron in Pharaoh's life to free the nation of Israel. So, as God worked, the condition of Pharaoh’s heart continued to harden rather than soften. God told Moses, in Exodus 7:1...

Day 2

Today, God said to Moses, in Exodus 8:1–3, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord, “Let My people go, that they may serve Me. 2 But if you refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite your whole territory with frogs. 3 The Nile will swarm with frogs, which will come up and go into your house and into your bedroom and on your bed, a...

Day 3

Today, we read about the third and fourth plagues, the plagues of the gnats and flies. God did not send Moses to speak to Pharaoh before the gnats came. God said to Moses, in Exodus 8:16, “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the earth, that it may become gnats through all the land of Egypt.’” Also, as I mentioned in y...

Day 4

God continued His plagues on Egypt, and as He did, Pharaoh continued to harden his heart. We have discussed this already, but, as a reminder, God did harden Pharaoh’s heart, and Pharaoh hardened his own heart. It was not one or the other, but it was both. God warns us, “Do not harden your hearts” in Hebrews 3:8—so, we know it’s possible to ha...

Day 5

God continued bringing His plagues on Pharaoh and all of the Egyptians. As God spoke to Moses and Aaron, He told them, in Exodus 9:8–9, “Take for yourselves handfuls of soot from a kiln, and let Moses throw it toward the sky in the sight of Pharaoh. 9 It will become fine dust over all the land of Egypt, and will become boils breaking out with...

Day 6

Remember from yesterday’s devotion that God had sent Moses to talk to Pharaoh. God had Moses proclaim that all the plagues had been happening to show Pharaoh and the Egyptians that no one was like God in all the earth. God also had Moses say to Pharaoh, in Exodus 9:17, “Still you exalt yourself against My people by not letting them go.” Phara...
