Scripture to Read: Exodus 33:1–23
In Exodus 33, God told Moses to go and lead the people into the Promised Land and that He would send an angel with them but that He was not going. God said in Exodus 33:5, For the Lord had said to Moses, “Say to the sons of Israel, ‘You are an obstinate people; should I go up in your midst for one moment, I would destroy you. Now therefore, put off your ornaments from you, that I may know what I shall do with you.’” God challenged the people, for they needed to repent and show their love for Him. The people responded in the right way, as we read in Exodus 33:6, “So the sons of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments, from Mount Horeb onward.” The people knew it was not about their outward appearance but that their hearts needed to be revived by their God. Then, Moses spoke to the Lord and petitioned the Lord to stay with them. Moses said in Exodus 33:13, “Now therefore, I pray You, if I have found favor in Your sight, let me know Your ways that I may know You, so that I may find favor in Your sight. Consider too, that this nation is Your people.” Moses wanted to know God more intimately, and Moses knew that the nation of Israel was still God’s chosen nation. God’s response was beautiful in Exodus 33:14, “My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest.” What a great reminder that Christ is always with us, for His Spirit lives in us.
Challenge & Application
· How did God call the nation of Israel to repent, and what was the people’s response to God’s call?
· How does God deal with us today when we need to repent, and how is our fellowship restored with Him when we repent?
