Scripture to Read: Exodus 32:21–28
God used Moses to confront Aaron since Aaron allowed the people to act upon their sin of idolatry. Also, don’t miss Aaron’s lame excuse as Aaron answers Moses in Exodus 32:24—“I said to them, ’Whoever has any gold, let them tear it off. ’So they gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf,”—as if the calf just appeared on its own. When Aaron was confronted with his sin, he responded like a child who just did not know how to explain his sin. But we know the calf did not just appear because in Exodus 32:4, God’s Word says, “He took this from their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool and made it into a molten calf.” Aaron was responsible, and God used Moses to discipline the people for their sin. We know that sin always results in death but this time, God had Moses remove many of the men who led out in this sin of idolatry. In Exodus 32:26, Moses said, “Whoever is for the Lord, come to me!” The only men who responded to Moses’ call were “all the sons of Levi.” Moses instructed them to take up their swords and kill those who rebelled against God and His Word. We read in Exodus 32:28, “So the sons of Levi did as Moses instructed, and about three thousand men of the people fell that day.” God never deals with sin lightly because God knows how sin destroys His creation (James 1:13–16).
