Scripture to Read: Exodus 3:1
As we ended last week's devotions, we learned that Moses had fled to Midian, married Zipporah (one of the daughters of the priest of Midian), and over time, he became the father of two sons. We begin this week examining Exodus 3, and we open with Moses pasturing the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro. If we only look at Exodus, we’re not sure, at this point, how much time has passed. But as we examine the fullness of God’s Truth, God reveals this to us in Acts 7:30, “After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in the flame of a burning thorn bush.” Moses had been serving his father-in-law as a shepherd for forty years. Moses knew this desert land well and Horeb, later called Mount Sinai, is known as the “mountain of God” since God appeared to Moses there in the burning bush. God uses every life circumstance to grow us in Him and to prepare us for what He has for us to do. God knew He would use Moses to lead the nation of Israel out of Egypt and back to Horeb (Mount Sinai) to worship Him. Being a shepherd might seem like a lowly position, but God had been preparing Moses so he could lead over two million Israelites into the wilderness. God currently has us doing what we are doing to fulfill His purpose and plans and accomplish His will for His pleasure. We must ensure that we serve Him well right where we are (Colossians 3:17, 23–24).
