Scripture to Read: Exodus 20:11
God has given us an incredible week of exploring why He commanded the Israelites to work for six days and to set apart the seventh day as a holy day of rest. God tells us in Exodus 20:11, “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.” God used Himself as the perfect example, for He created everything in six days and chose to rest on the seventh day. As a little side note, those who do not believe in a literal six days of creation have to take this Scripture and many others just like it and totally cast them aside. So, as we have already discussed, God gives us constant reminders, and God gave another reminder to the Israelites of this same truth in Exodus 31:17, “It is a sign between Me and the sons of Israel forever; for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, but on the seventh day He ceased from labor, and was refreshed.” Note that even God’s Word says God was refreshed from His rest. God does not need rest nor refreshment as we do, but He wanted to be the perfect example for us, as being made in His image, to be filled with Him and to know our strength only comes from Him. God even tells us in Ephesians 6:10 to be sure that we are strong in Him and the strength of His might.
Challenge & Application
· We know we must serve our Lord well—so, how are you setting time aside for rest and refreshment to be God’s usable tool?
· What has God taught you this week that you did not know before, and how will you apply what you’ve learned?
Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!
