Day 3

Scripture to Read: Exodus 20:9

When most people think about work, they do not think about it as something pleasing, joyful, satisfying, or in any other positive light. Back in the 1970s, a popular phrase came to be about work: "Thank goodness it’s Friday!” Of course, people did not use the word “goodness” but used God’s name instead. What people were saying was that they were so thankful their work was over for a little while, but God gave us work as a gift. We mentioned that work is a gift in day one's devotion, and we see it in Genesis 2:15: “Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it.” What happened was that because of sin entering this world, one of the consequences of sin was that work became hard. In Genesis 3, after Adam sinned, this is what God told Adam in Genesis 3:17–19, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’; Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. 18 “Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; And you will eat the plants of the field; 19 By the sweat of your face you will eat bread…” God did not say He cursed “work,” but He cursed the ground. Work was and still is a gift, but it will be difficult until we are called home.

Challenge & Application

· For people who do not understand that work is a gift from God, how can you help them understand the gift they have? · How will your attitude change about “work” knowing God called you to work for Him?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

God continued to speak to Moses as He gave Him the Ten Commandments. God has us focused on the sabbath this week. God has much to say to us, so, as we examine His Word, let us all ask Him not to allow us to miss everything He desires us to learn and then apply to our lives. In Exodus 20:8, God said to Moses, “Remember the sabbath day, to keep...

Day 2

God made sure that the Israelites knew that the Sabbath was to be kept holy. This day was to be set apart from every other day. Remember, God was re-establishing for Israel what He had foundationally set at the beginning of creation in Genesis 2:2–3, “By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh da...

Day 4

God makes it clear that we are to work/labor for six days and then rest on the seventh day. Here in America, we know that most people labor for only five days and then rest for two. “The five-day, 40-hour workweek became part of American labor law partly due to Henry Ford. In 1926, the founder of the Ford Motor Company took his six-day-a-week...

Day 5

We have already talked about it this week, but God is ensuring that the Israelites understand how important the sabbath is in order to get some rest. In Exodus 23, God gives the Israelites a little more detail on why the sabbath is important. God said in Exodus 23:12, “…but on the seventh day you shall cease from labor so that your ox and you...

Day 6

God gave the Israelites a day of rest, not just to rest but to focus on what God had done, was doing, and what He called them to do. As Jesus was challenged by the religious leaders of His day about the meaning behind the sabbath, He clarified who was in charge of the Sabbath. So, we read in Matthew 12:8–14, “For the Son of Man is Lord of the...

Day 7

God has given us an incredible week of exploring why He commanded the Israelites to work for six days and to set apart the seventh day as a holy day of rest. God tells us in Exodus 20:11, “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sab...
